I am here with September  Wrap Up. This month I read a total of 4 books and 1,231 pages.

The genres I read this month were fantasy and non-fiction and a classic. I read 1 standalones, 1 first book and 2 sequels.

Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #1) by Leigh Bardugo  

Oh my god! I adored this book even though it destroyed me only about 1,000 times. Crooked Kingdom was a pretty perfect finale even though it kills me a little that we aren’t guaranteed another books with these characters. I will try and keep my through vague a spoiler free for those who haven’t read Six of Crows. 

Without the backdrop of the heist and being thrown into new danger, we got to see a lot more from the gang. There are more quiet spaces within the drama, that we get to know more about them and how they ended up in the streets of Ketterdam. Also, we go to see the relationships solidify. Nina and Inje have to be the best female friendship I have ever read in any book. Nina and Mattias make my heart burst, I adore their relationship as it struggles against the racial prejudice they were taught. Waylan and Jesper are so sweet they make my teeth hurt!

If you’re looking for an action-packed fantasy with a world not based on Medival England with strong character development, The Six of Crows Duology is for you.

What Would Boudicca Do?: Everyday Problems Solved by History’s Most Remarkable Women by E. Foley & B. Coates

This book comes out in a wake of a whole array of books over the last two years that celebrate the women that history glossed over. Books like Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, Bygone Badass Broads and Reject Princesses to name a few. While I am so happy that finally we are finally shining a light on these women, there is quite a lot of similarities between the titles. What Would Boudicca Do? is different.

Rather than just talk about different women across history, this book gives you reasons why they were so amazing and stood among their peers and how their stories can help you through life problems. Sections like ‘Grace Hopper and Facing Up to Failure’, ‘Sappho and Backing Yourself’ and ‘Mae West and Body Positivity’ really resonated with me.

I flew through this book. I enjoyed the way that both Foley and Coates told their history in modern terms and highlight just how much they have in common with the women of today. Highly amusing at times and wholly inspiring. Also, I adore the illustrations throughout really helps to pictures these awesome ladies. I will definitely be dipping in and out of this books whenever I need a little pick me. Highly recommended for all ages.

Whisper of Sin (Psy-Changeling #0.6) by Nalini Singh 

The last of the currently published Psy-Changeling stories. This was everything I really needed. Romance, shapeshifters and an intricate world. I would recommend reading the first book, Slave to Sensation as there isn’t much of world building. But it was amazing to see how Emmett and Ria got together, also how DarkRiver gained control of San Fransico.

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs

I needed a new urban fantasy/paranormal series now that I have finished Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series and I’d heard pretty good this about this one. This series follow Mercy Thompson, a mechanic with the ability to shapeshift into a coyote. She’s tries her best to stay away from the trouble surrounding the town Fae, Vampires and Werewolves, but doesn’t really work out for her. This book was fast paced and I really enjoyed Mercy’s sarcasm.

Normally I’m not a huge fan of having too many magical/supernatural beings floating around in my urban fantasy – but I suppose it makes sense, if vampires exist why not gremlins and werewolves too. But I wasn’t too phased by it, I think because Patricia Briggs focused mainly on the wolves and is slowly expanding to the other areas of this world. A strong start to the series and I’m interested to see what happens next for Mercy and the Tri-Cities.
