“I want to tuck you into the space between my heartbeats.”
I will start by saying that I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank so much Meg and Kim for sending a copy my way!
This is a sequel; I will try and keep my review as spoiler free as possible but just be wary if you haven’t read first book, Sin.
I had one keep her safe. But instead of doing my duty, I’d nearly lost her more than once.
In my defense, what does the Horseman War know about stopping the apocalypse? Nothing. My goal has always been to fight and raze my enemies to the ground. Merri wasn’t an enemy, though she felt like one. In a matter of weeks she’s found her way through each and every one of my defenses. In fact, she’s done that to us all.

And me, Chaos.
My name has never felt more fitting, because chaos is exactly what she’s unleashed within me. These days I can hardly tell if I’m coming or going. Everything I thought I knew has been turned on its head because of her.
Forced to abandon our home, we’re isolated together on a remote island in France. Off the grid. Hidden from detection. Ever closer to Doomsday, we have to get our job done and put a child in her before Lucifer finds her. So far no baby, but he hasn’t found us either. The others act like that’s some sort of victory, but I didn’t get this far resting on my laurels. It’s only a matter of time before he and his Princes make their play. We simply have to keep one step ahead of them if we want to win.
Because despite what you might think, the end of the world isn’t a game to me. Not when Merri’s life is on the line.
The Mate Games series has me in a serious chokehold. There’s an immense amount of joy that fills me every time I pick up a new Mate Games book. Chaos was no exception. I adored every second.
This book’s name perfectly reflects its chaotic content. From sex comas, exclusive underground book club meetings, talks of starting a dick flash mob, cam sessions and their wild comment sections and all this with the background of the end of the world. Lucifer is amassing his army and looks pretty unstoppable. Unless the Horseman can complete their mission. Despite being hidden on an isolated French Island with all the forced proximity, Malice, Chaos, Sin, and Grim are struggling to win Merri’s affection and knock her up, which will save the world. With Knights of Hell joining Lucifer, time is running out.
Poor Merri. She has accidentally stumbled across some additional succubus powers she didn’t know she had. With this, she can feed deeply without harming anyone while learning more about Malice, Chaos, Sin, and Grim. But these powers are apparently illegal and everybody seems to know this. I can feel her frustration at being kept in the dark about her role in the apocalypse and her abilities. I hope Merri learns the truth soon — either from Lilith or one of the Horsemen — before she does something stupid to put herself at risk and into Lucifer’s path.
Sin and Chaos are doing all they can to woo Merri. The swoon I swooned when Sin admitted he wants a relationship and is scared to be vulnerable but will do it with her. I died! We love a man who can be emotionally available. Chaos struggles to express his feelings like Sin but is fully committed to Merri. Both Malice and Grim are keeping their distance for separate reasons. We learn more about Malice’s history, particularly why he’s been an absent father. Wow, did that break my heart. Underneath his grumpy exterior, we see he does have a soft side. I hope he gets to build a relationship with his child. Grim worries he might accidentally kill Merri, as he is Death. I love the softer glimpses we get — from his love of gardening to his daddy vibes.
The heat is off the charts. With both Sin and Merri feeding off sexual energy, the steamy scenes are next level. Especially looking at you, joint cam scene. I needed to cool off after that one. The romance is slow to build — which is something I love to balance out the early steam. Merri is struggling with her need to feed and fears she will hurt someone again. None of the characters are great at communicating and expressing their feelings, which leads to some slight, but realistic, miscommunication. I want to shake them all to get them to use their big people words and talk to each other. I am looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops as the series progresses, especially after Merri learned about the Horsemen’s intentions.
I am living for the Operation PFFN. What a fantastic way to check in with what’s happening in the outside world and with the characters from the previous series. I especially loved getting Asher’s updates with Pan and Caleb as they carefully translated an ancient text to try and find a way to stop the apocalypse. We also get a moment where Caine reaches out to the Horsemen, seemingly to ask for help. But there is a lot of mistrust on either side. They ignore the call for help to ensure they focus on protecting Merri. I cannot wait to see how the past characters will help Merri and the Horsemen in the sequels.
Like always, I listened to this one on audiobook. It was perfection. Can we get a round of applause for the incredible narrators—Stella Hunter, Shane East, J.F. Harding, Jason Clarke, James Joseph, Teddy Hamilton and Christian Fox—who have brought these characters and this world to life. Chaos is truly a masterful audiobook. The phenomenal editing, including the weaving together of each narrator’s dialogue and the audio distortion for the broadcast sections, added to the immersive reading experience. I cannot wait to listen to this time and time again.
To no one’s surprise, I adored every moment of Chaos. I need the next book, pronto! These cliffhanger endings are not good for my heart. K. Loraine and Meg Anne always deliver jaw-dropping twists, which makes the wait for the sequel feel like forever and a day! Honestly, I have no clue what will happen, yet I’m ready for it. I am obsessed with this world and this writing duo’s signature brand of paranormal romance. If you haven’t picked up this series yet; what are you waiting for? You need to read it! Especially if you love a wild paranormal romance like me.
