“You have to let me fly, River, or I’ll end up broken.”

I will start by saying that I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank so much Alexis and Grey’s Promotions for sending a copy my way!

This is a sequel; I will try and keep my review as spoiler free as possible but just be wary if you haven’t read first two books, Killer of Mine & Secrets of Mine.

She used to work for the FBI… Now she’s the one hiding from them…

Freya should finally be free. Safe. But her life is rarely that simple and the Cross-Cut Killer case is far more complicated than anyone realized. Now, it’s more personal than ever and the killer is determined to make Freya’s existence a living hell. She did what he wanted, she ran from the men she loved and now it’s slowly killing her.

Hiding out with her pseudo-sister Carmen may be a temporary solution but it won’t heal the trauma she’s been through and River, Jude, Eli and Oz aren’t about to let her suffer on her own.

They’re coming for her, whether she wants them to or not, and Freya is left with no choice. She can’t avoid the guys forever, not if she wants to catch the killer, because it turns out he’s not done hunting and this time a little girl’s life hangs in the balance.

I had no idea what I was expecting from Darkness of Mine but Alexis Grace absolutely nailed it. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I’m still thinking about the ending. Honestly, I want to reread this series so I can pick up all the clues that have been sprinkled throughout. While I’m sad this is the end, it was the perfect ending for Freya, River, Jude, Eli and Oz.

Darkness of Mine had my emotions in a chokehold from the very start. Thankfully, we pick up where Secrets of Mine left off. Freya is dealing with some resurfaced trauma while also working to solve the case. Intense tension builds as Freya and the SUC unit race to capture the killer and rescue a little girl who’s been taken. And on top of this, Freya, River, Jude, Eli and Oz’s relationship is rocky after Freya runs to protect them from the killer they are hunting. The plot was a perfect balance of the high suspense of a Criminal Minds episode with an angsty, why choose romance. I ate every word up!

Freya has gone through so much trauma, and we see her struggle with her mental health. Living to survive, she focused on targets, Freya finally has time to pause and is struggling with the weight of her trauma. She’s angry, scared and feeling out of control. I adored the way Freya’s mental health struggles are represented. She gets a therapist and finally gets the chance to talk through what’s happened to her. I also love the way River, Jude, Eli and Oz helped support her by giving her space but also forcing her to face her emotions. I adored getting to see Freya finally realise that she has a home with these FBI agents and that she doesn’t have to hold this burden alone. She now has a safe space to heal and live a normal life.

The guys are all processing Freya’s running away. Knowing Freya’s decision protected them logically, but they are still furious. She yielded to the killer’s demands instead of continuing the case. I was not expecting River to be the one to go full dark side. Everyone is struggling with Freya’s leaving and is running themselves ragged trying to find her, all while working on the developing Cross-Cut Killer case. River is utilising all the resources at his disposal as an FBI agent to track her down, even those that skirt the line of what is legal. When they finally get Freya back, he’s crossed several boundaries, including some of Freya’s triggers, in the guise of keeping her safe. Jude has withdrawn; gone is his sunny disposition as he tries to process his feelings of being abandoned. Oz is spending increasingly more time on the dark web hunting down leads on the case and Freya’s location. He’s not sleeping. The longer he sees the world’s evil, the more jaded he becomes. Eli is trying to keep everyone together, holding on to the hope they will find her.

I appreciate how their relationship strengthens after the pain and broken trust. River and the rest of the guys all realise that they’ve crossed some lines, and they need to keep Freya safe and with them. Queue the grovelling, which was so good! They get the chance to talk through everything and find their way forward. I particularly loved the birthday party they threw for Freya with all the party staples, especially since Freya had never celebrated her birthday before. We have some truly streamy scenes sprinkled throughout, including some knife play where Eli tries to help Freya process her fear of turning into her father.

I am obsessed with Darkness of Mine and the complete series. This was the perfect ending of the series—even if it’s a touch bittersweet that it’s over because I could read endless books about Freya, River, Jude, Eli and Oz. I am so excited to see what Alexis Grace writes next and am secretly hoping we get Carmen’s story. If you love a dark romance that’s why choose and has Criminal Minds vibes, then you 100% need to read this!
