“As you wish, Princess. I’m not going anywhere.”
I will start by saying that I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are my own. Thank you so much to Kate for sending a copy my way!
For fifteen years, Darla has been stranded, alone, on a deserted island. But when three strange men crash-land there, she watches from the trees, terrified they’ll be just as cruel as the last men who came.
But these men are different. They laugh, they share, they’re kind to the wildlife. And despite every instinct telling her to stay hidden, Darla finds herself drawn to them. She begins helping in secret, leaving food and small gifts, until the line between fear and curiosity begins to blur.
When she must choose between staying hidden or saving their lives, the answer is clear. And soon, they awaken something inside her she thought had died long ago… hope.
But Darla knows all too well, paradise can turn deadly in an instant.
She’s survived alone this long… but can she survive letting them in?
When Kate King initially mentioned that A Storm in Every Heart blends The Little Mermaid with The Princess Bride, I knew I had to get my hands on a copy. I was 100% sure I was going to love it. And this didn’t disappoint. I adored every second of this book.
We are introduced to Odessa and Kastian in the first book. The tension is palpable between them. Odessa seems to want nothing to do with him, but Kastian can’t keep away from her. While the second book in the Enchanted Legacies series, A Storm in Every Heart, can be read as a standalone. It’s told in a dual timeline where we get flashbacks of the summer when Odessa and Kastian first met. The flashbacks aren’t too overwhelming and have been woven in to impact maximum emotional damage. To grasp the wider context regarding the globe plus supporting characters, I recommend starting with A Throne in Every Heart. It’s also another wonderful romantasy with fairytale elements.
Odessa is feeling a little lost. Her cousin has taken the throne of Vernallis, and everyone in their little found family has found their place in his court, except for her. She’s a landlocked siren, so she doesn’t have the same abilities as the fae. Odessa’s only ability is that she can use her voice to manipulate people. My heart ached when we found out why she can’t access her power and why she stays away from the ocean. Odessa accepts the King of Hydratta’s request to visit his country. She’s not interested in his marriage proposal, but it gives her the perfect opportunity to visit the court and try to find out why the king is determined to ally with Vernallis. Also, through this mission, Odessa could find her purpose at court and become her cousin’s ambassador. I adored seeing Odessa reclaim her power and find her place in the world.
Kastian is the broody Westly of my dreams. I love him. He was banished to Dyaspora — the prison island — when his father’s top advisor staged a coup, murdered his family and crowned himself king. Kastian was never sure why he was the sole survivor. He also has no solid memory of what happened in the lead-up to the coup. My jaw dropped once everything’s revealed. The clues are intricately woven together and only makes sense once Odessa and Kastian’s secrets are uncovered. Underneath Kastian’s broody and reserved exterior is an introverted perfectionist. He never wanted his father’s throne because he knew he would struggle under the weight of that responsibility, as he’s a perfectionist and knows he could never delegate. It was refreshing to see that level of self-awareness. As a fellow introverted perfectionist, it was so relatable.
Second-chance romances can go either way for me, but this was perfection. Having those flashbacks helps us see how their relationship develops. They also work to break your heart when you find out what broke them apart. I loved the fuck-it scene we get at the start. The deal is one night to help get over their simmering attraction. Which backfires spectacularly when Kastian’s mating instinct kicks in, despite knowing he has a fated mate out there. But Kastian’s not interested her because he only wants Odessa. The steam here is hot as hell, looking at your boat scene. I adore the banter between these two. They constantly bicker, since neither excels at discussing emotions. Both Kastian and Odessa have a bit of a martyr complex. I just wanted to shake them so they could talk to each other. I was cheering when they finally admitted their feelings.
I loved that the world of the series expands with each book. I appreciate that while there are retelling elements, the world and stories still feel like their own thing. The retelling elements are little Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. I especially loved all The Princess Bride elements. Also, the twist of The Little Mermaid creates a unique reason for the second-chance romance. It was such a fun combination.
I am having so much fun reading this series. Enchanted Legacies might be one of my favourite romantasy series. I am dying for the next book, which will be Fox’s book, our quiet Fae from the winter lands. If you love your romantasy with a complex relationship, court politics, pirates and a beautiful fairytale twist, I highly recommend picking this up.
