“You may not have signed up for it, but you were born to be my everything.”
I will start by saying that I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank so much Meg and Kim for sending a copy my way!
This is a sequel; I will try and keep my review as spoiler free as possible but just be wary if you haven’t read first three books, Sin, Chaos & Malice.
I did the unthinkable and rejected the only woman who ever really wanted me. What else was I supposed to do when she was asking for a future that could never exist? Horsemen didn’t have souls. And if a future did exist for our kind, it was bathed in blood and unholy fire. Hardly the stuff dreams were made of.
Merri deserved more than nightmares. I thought I was saving her from such a fate, instead I’d unwittingly sent her flying into the arms of the one being I was supposed to protect her from. My wildflower was in Lucifer’s clutches, and we had no idea how to get her back.
My brothers blamed me for her absence, and rightfully so. I’d broken her heart as well as theirs in the process. The only way we’d stand a chance at bringing her home where she belonged was for the four of us to stand together and ride to her rescue.
Lilith chose us to be her protectors.
Chaos protected her body.
Sin protected her heart.
Malice protected her mind.
And I did all I could to protect her soul from anything that might harm it, including myself.
But we couldn’t carry out our mission without her. With the apocalypse looming ever closer, it was time for the four horsemen to do the impossible and use our considerable power for good.
Otherwise all of this pain and heartbreak was for nothing and no one would ever get a chance at a happily ever after again.Holy hell, Batman! What did I just read? There seem to be pages missing in my book because there is no way we can end here. Did I finish Grim and sit staring off into the distance for way too long? Why yes, yes, I did. My brain is working overtime because I have no idea how Merri and the Horsemen are getting out of this with the world intact.
Since this is the third book in the series, I will keep everything super vague because there won’t be any spoilers here. Thankfully, we pick up right where Malice left off because the ending was wild. Merri is still struggling with her succubus powers and wants to believe she’s not this monster who’s manipulating people. It doesn’t help that the horsemen’s reactions in the last book. And on top of this, the Knights of Hell are getting released in quick succession, and we are hurtling rapidly into the apocalypse.
My heart aches for Merri. All she wants is to be loved and to have someone love her for who she is. The poor thing hasn’t had the best luck with guys, with her first love and then the horsemen being emotionally constipated, and now we have Lucifer. A man who only seems to want her because it will help him end the world. She has landed herself in a tricky situation and in the exact opposite of where she should be. Merri has to confront the fact that she’s a pawn in this game and has to claw back her agency.
Lucifer has officially entered the chat, and I kind of love him. Is he a raging narcissist who wants to destroy the world? Why yes, yes he is. But did we get to see the softer side of him? Also yes. The sweet moments make me think he might not be the devil everyone thinks he is. I honestly have no idea how he’s going to fit in with the HEA, but I have every faith my queens, K. Loraine and Meg Anne, will make it work.
Now we come to the horsemen. My God, I want to shake the lot of them! Thankfully, they seem to have got their act together, and they’ve pulled their heads out of their asses—looking at you, Grim, in particular. They are doing everything they can to find Merri. I adored the dream walk moments where they finally tell Merri how they feel. Sin’s might just be my favourite and had me swooning all over the place.
The action is really picking up. So much happened. I have so many questions. The stakes just got higher. I have no idea how this story is going to wrap up, but after all the events and twists that happened, I just know that the final book is going to be epic!
I adore the Operation PFFN moments. I love that we got some POV chapters from them sprinkled throughout. Getting to see the characters from the previous Mate Games series is so much fun and makes me want to reread their books.
Can we take a moment to talk about the audiobook? Audio is by far my favourite way to consume this series, and Grim was a perfect addition to this series. I am endlessly in awe of our incredible cast of narrators who’ve brought these characters to life. Let’s give a round of applause to Stella Hunter, Shane East, J.F. Harding, Jason Clarke, James Joseph, Teddy Hamilton and Christian Fox, whose talent has created an amazing immersive reading experience.
I am so glad we are getting another book in this series! Am I a little sad that this universe is coming to an end? Yes, but I am excited for the last book. Now for my standard spiel, if you haven’t started this series and you are a why choose, paranormal romance girly like me, what are you doing? You need to pick this up ASAP! We have a bonkers, wild plot with a steamy romance and fated mates. Put simply, it’s perfection.
