“Wherever you go I’ll always follow you.”

I will start by saying that I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are my own. Thank you so much to Kate for sending a copy my way!

This is a sequel; I will try and keep my review as spoiler free as possible but just be wary if you haven’t read A Thorn in Every Heart,  A Storm in Every Heart & A Holiday in Every Heart.

The Sorceress:
Fae princess Aurelia wants nothing more than to have an adventure. Raised in secret to keep her safe from her tyrannical father, she was never allowed to claim her royal heritage or even leave her tower. Now, her father is dead and she’s free to go wherever she wants, but she still can’t seem to find the will to walk away…all because of the silent and aloof captain of the guards.

The Soldier:
Half-fae, half-wolf shifter, Fox’s life has been one long, dangerous adventure. Drafted into the deadliest army in Ellender at age six, he fought every day of his life just to stay alive. Now, he’s somehow found himself captaining the new king’s private army, and becoming far too interested in the tiny, annoyingly optimistic sorceress next door.

Fox and Aurelia have maintained a secret casual relationship for almost two years. During the day they never speak, but at night he makes her scream. It’s supposed to stay strictly physical, and Fox especially is adamant that no feelings get involved. But when Aurelia finally has a reason to leave on the adventure she’s always wanted, Fox finds he can’t let her go without a fight.

A Hunger in Every Heart is one of my anticipated releases of 2026. I’m thrilled to say this was perfection. I devoured it. I’ve been interested in Aurelia and Fox throughout the series. This is another fantastic addition to one of my all-time favourite series. And I’m head over heels in love!

You can read A Hunger in Every Heart as a standalone book. The book opens at the start of Aurelia and Fox’s secret, sexy benefits relationship. We get snapshots of events from the previous books, but shown from their point of view. But I would recommend reading the other books because a) they are fantastic and b) the tension between them had been building throughout, which makes their romance all the more delicious.

As mentioned, we are following Aurelia and Fox. Aurelia has spent most of her life in hiding from her tyrannical father. She’s now free to go on all the grand adventures she’s dreamed of, but she keeps finding reasons to stay, most of which surround the reserve army general Fox. Fox’s life has been dangerous. He’s a half-fae, half-wolf shifter who was conscripted into Thermia’s army as a child. Fox is not interested in any more adventures after fighting daily to stay alive. The pair has hidden a casual relationship for years. It’s strictly physical — or at least that’s the agreement. But when Aurelia finally goes on the adventure she’s always dreamed of, Fox can’t seem to let her go alone.

Aurelia is an absolute ray of sunshine. For someone who’s spent her whole life hiding in fear of her father, Aurelia is a bleeding heart. She constantly saves every animal she comes across. Shout out to Eugene, the squirrel, for being the cutest little sidekick. Aurelia is a touch naive. Always believing everything will work out. I’m in awe of the strength it took her to distance herself from Fox when she realised that he’s not willing to commit to anything serious. She knows her worth and isn’t willing to settle for less. I adore the courage she has to finally go on an adventure.

I loved getting to see the wolves and how they worked. They communicate telepathically, which makes sense why Fox doesn’t talk much. The wolves are currently under the rule of a tyrannical leader. The more we learn about wolves and Fox’s history, the more my heart aches for him.

I love a grumpy man who’s only soft for the one he loves and Fox is a peak example of this. For a man who speaks mostly in grunts, Fox sure is the king of dirty talk. Sprinkled throughout, there are so many moments that reveal his feelings. It’s in the little, quiet ways he cares for Aurelia and the things she loved. Looking at you, little rabbit. Fox really had me swooning!

The romance was a wild ride. It’s a steam first, feelings later kind of romance. Fox is doing all he can to keep Aurelia at arm’s length, but can’t deny her. He lets Aurelia make the moves and will give her all he’s able to, even knowing it’s not enough or what she deserves. On their travels, they bump into Fox’s old pack. The pair are taken to his old army camp. The downside is that the wolves hate Fae and all things magic. The only way Fox can keep Aurelia safe is to pretend she is his mate. I was squealing! I adore a forced proximity moment.

I am endlessly obsessed with how Kate King can blend two fairytales — we have Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood in this one — into her fantasy world while still making it fresh and exciting. I was giggling at every nod and Easter egg we got from the tales.

Where are my romantasy girlies at? If you haven’t picked up this series yet, what are you doing? A Hunger in Every Heart is the perfect cosy but spicy fairytale retelling that you need to pick up ASAP. And while you are at it, treat yourself: read the entire series! We have one book left, which is bittersweet, buuuut it is Jett’s book, which I am beyond excited! Honestly, I might reread this series to tide me over until the next release.
