“I’ve domesticated a serial killer”
I will start by saying that I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are my own. Thank you so much to Alexis and Luna Literary for sending a copy my way!
What happens when a vigilante serial killer climbs in through your bedroom window?
Hazel
I never really considered what I’d be doing the first time I met a serial killer but if I had, it wouldn’t have been dancing around my bedroom in nothing but my nightshirt.
‘Move in next to a secure psychiatric prison’, they said. ‘No one will ever break out’, they said. Tell that to America’s most dangerous vigilante who’s currently standing in my lilac themed bedroom.
Except Flynn is about as far from how I imagine a serial killer to be as possible. He’s funny, protective and it’s only when he touches me that his darker side comes out to play. And maybe working as a 911 operator has messed me up because that Flynn, he doesn’t scare me, he enthralls me.
Flynn
The last thing I expected when I broke out of the insane asylum was to face off with a five-foot-nothing woman wielding a vibrator wand.
I have one last monster to hunt. I don’t have time to obsess over sweet-as-pie Hazel Halloway. But my little lilac is a fixation I can’t shake, and it turns out Hazel’s past leads right back to the monster I’m hunting.
It’s not long before that man turns his sights on her, but I fell for Hazel the second I climbed through her bedroom window, and here’s the thing about morally black men, no one hurts the people we love.
To no one’s surprise, I adore every second of Choked in Love. Alexis Grace is one of my auto buy authors for a reason. Who knew that a serial killer turned stalker could be one of the sweetest men I’ve ever read? It wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card, but I am here for it!
The balance between the rom-com and dark elements was perfect. Please check the trigger warnings because we are covering some dark topics here. True to form, the suspense plot is full of twists and turns. If you love Alexis Grace’s Of Mine series or S.T. Abby’s Mind F*** series, Choked in Love is for you. Flynn and his brother, Lachlan, are working together to get justice for their sister. Their sister was gang rape while at university. She was blackmailed into keeping quiet before she committed suicide. Flynn has spent the year tracking down and murdering every person involved in her assault. He has one last kill and an escape from psychiatric prison standing between him and freedom. However, his last target reveals there’s one person he missed from the list. Flynn needs a place to lie low while he plans his next move. Enter Hazel and her easy-to-break-into home. Hazel’s past might hold the answers to the missing piece of the puzzle of his sister’s assault, which could uncover something more insidious.
An unhinged golden retriever is one of my favourite hero types, and Flynn is the epitome of this. He’s your classic sociopath serial killer who goes after bad guys. Flynn has thrown himself into seeking revenge for his sister. She was the only person who understood that he was different and still loved him for it. Flynn had me swooning all over the place. His brand of vigilante justice is something I can get behind. Who can be mad when his breaking-and-entering skills are used to make sure Hazel has groceries and a proper security system? And his light stalking is just to make sure she doesn’t get herself into danger? Flynn has a wicked sense of humour. I loved all his serial killer puns. They had me cackling.
I completely love how self-aware Hazel is about her attraction to Flynn. Her inner monologue had me in stitches. I highlighted just about every monologue because they are gold. Hazel is an emergency operator and she’s in a bit of a rut. She’s living in her childhood home after her grandmother passed away and is working the same job her best friend helped her get after helping her escape from an abusive relationship. Hazel hasn’t fully confronted her trauma and is too scared to chase her dreams. I wanted to give her the biggest hug. Change can be scary, but sometimes you have to do the scary thing. I loved how Hazel’s trauma intersects with Flynn’s revenge. The twists had my jaw dropping. I adored how she healed and went after her dreams.
I love her best friends, Wright and Olivia. This is a girl group I want to be part of. Lowkey, I’m hoping they are the FMCs in the next books. Hazel is definitely the innocent one of the group. She believes in the greater good and looks the other way at Wright and Olivia’s vigilante extracurricular activities.
Can we get a round of applause for this meet-cute? Flynn essentially breaks into Hazel’s house to hide from the cops, only to catch Hazel dancing her stressful day away. The moment Hazel notices Flynn, she threatens him with a vibrator. Instead of calling the cops, Hazel makes Flynn a hot chocolate and falls asleep on him while watching Friends. Cue Flynn’s obsession. I adore these two together. Their attraction is palpable from the first page. Their banter is top-tier. I love how Flynn shows Hazel time and time again that he is her perfect person, even if it wouldn’t appear so on paper.
The steam is steaming. Flynn is also a virgin, which we love to see. If we know anything about this man, he’s not afraid to research. He reads romance books to help him learn about physical intimacy, which I adore. Honestly, more men should take a page out of his book—pun intended!
If it’s not obvious, I am just as obsessed with Choked in Love as Flynn is obsessed with Hazel. I am beyond excited for the next book in this series. If you love a dark rom-com and haven’t added this to your TBR, girl, what are you doing? You need to read this stat!
